CENTAUR: DOE Funded Project for ‘Basic Research in Low-Energy Nuclear Science’

The Center for Excellence in Nuclear Training And University-based Research (CENTAUR) is a multi-institutional effort led by Texas A&M University and supported by a five-year, $10 million Stewardship Science Academic Alliances (SSAA) grant from the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA). CENTAUR will pursue basic research in low-energy nuclear science through experimental, theoretical, and technical programs using accelerators at Texas A&M’s Cyclotron Institute and Florida State University’s John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory as well as facilities at the other participating institutions. Existing collaborations between scientists at Texas A&M and the NNSA national laboratories—including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—will be incorporated into center programs and expanded to involve scientists from all partner institutions, which include Florida State, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Washington, Louisiana State University and the University of Notre Dame.

When they state they are pursuing basic research in “low-energy nuclear science”, it does sound like LENR might be covered, but it’s not clear if they really are interested in it. This is a grant from the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, which normally deals with traditional nuclear fission.

“These grants are instrumental in developing the next generation of scientists in areas of relevance to the stockpile stewardship mission,” said Dr. Kathleen Alexander, Assistant Deputy Administrator for Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation in NNSA’s Office of Defense Programs.

Texas A&M University will receive $10 million over five years to manage the Center for Excellence in Nuclear Training and University-based Research (CENTAUR), which will measure high-impact reaction observables and make reaction theory more robust.

CENTAUR, led by Dr. Sherry Yennello, will combine experimental and theoretical initiatives to measure relevant nuclear structure and reaction properties with a large focus on the use of radioactive beams and/or targets. Academic partner institutions include: Florida State University, Washington University, the University of Washington, and Louisiana State University.

Launched in 2002, the SSAA program supports areas of fundamental research and development that are relevant to NNSA’s stockpile stewardship mission while helping to recruit the next generation of highly-trained technical scientists and engineers for the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

Radio Waves Experiment (Sean)

I thought it would be useful to start a new thread with these two comments by Sean from the recent Electric Universe Thread here, who has shared some details from an experiment he has done.

1. Just did an experiment. I took a normal 3 inch long x 3/8″ Dia.Steel spring an using a voltmeter set to Millivolts and proceeded to do the following. Across the spring length = 0 mv. across the magnet = 0 mv. Placed insulation tape between magnet and spring = .8 mv. I think that its picking up background radiation. So the next experiment was to measure my mobile VHF/UHF ham radio antenna indoors. I hooked up the PL259 plug directly to to voltmeter and I measured 3.7 mv.

2. Well I think I have found the missing ingredient to that You-Tube video. It is something that you cannot see. RADIO WAVES. I set up the experiment again and keyed up my Baofeng hand held ham radio a few feet away and up went the voltage to 2.3 Volts. That’s enough to light a LED. I remember when I had CB sets back in the 70’s, You could tape a Neon light to the antenna for fun. When you keyed up the neon would light up extremely bright especially if you place it near the loading coil at center mast. (It got very hot also).

Electric Universe Conference in UK to Feature SAFIRE Team Leader Childs

Thanks to Steve Taylor for posting the following about an upcoming presentation about the Electric Universe project. Many readers will recall that the SAFIRE (Stellar Atmospheric Function In Regulation Experiment) project is connected with the Electric Universe project. The SAFIRE team is carrying out experiments to test the ‘Electric Sun’ theory.

In a presentation made last year the SAFIRE team reported about an anomalous heat event that occurred inside their experimental reaction chambers in which a tungsten probe used to measure reaction temperatures was vaporized when the input power at the time was only 182 W.  The presentation can be seen on this video:

Ionizing Radiation from E-Cats beyond Background has ‘Never’ Been Detected

We constantly measure all the radiations emitted by the Ecat. The emissions have also been thoroughly measured by the specialized officers of the Healthcare Office of Florida, that has a team of specialized agents for this specific purpose, as well as from Physics Professors specialized in such measurement and NEVER has been measured an excess of ionizing radiations beyond the background. In some of the public tests that have taken place over the years, there have been radiation measurements taken close to the E-Cats, and no radiation beyond background has been reported. This comment is the first time that I can recall Andrea Rossi stating that officers from the Healthcare Office of Florida have measured radiation from the E-Cat. It would be interesting to read a report from those tests.

Rossi: E-Cat SK Test a ‘Great’ Success

Andrea Rossi had been reporting that a very important test of the the higher-powered E-Cat SK was to take place at the end of June and yesterday on the Journal of Nuclear Physics he reported that he was extremely pleased. Here are a few of his comments:

“I just finished now the test with the SK. I am trembling for the emotion. Probably we will present it. We made enormous progress in the last several weeks. The test has been not good. The test has been great.”

“We tested a version very close to the industrialization and it did not show any trouble in a long test, besides I had confirmation of the validity of an intuition that simplify remarkably the SK system.”

“We will probably present both the QX and the SK”

We have come to learn that this kind of report is quite typical of Rossi — he never rests trying to improve his products and he regularly tests new ‘intuitions’ that he think can improve and/or simplify his products. He is still talking about two products: the QX and the SK, but I wonder if the new progress on the SK will start to take all his attention.

There’s another thing to point out in his recent comments — Gerald McEk asked him if he still thought he could deliver an industrial E-Cat plant by the end of this year; Rossi’s response was “no”. So his timeline projections are slipping somewhat — which I had somewhat expected — since just a few weeks ago he said he hoped to have products delivered to customers before the end of 2018.

As I wrote yesterday regarding the need for commercial LENR in order for it to be taken seriously, if Rossi really has what he says he has, then the “highest echelons” of industry are naturally going to be very interested in what he has, because the E-Cat represents a real revolution in energy production and an opportunity for cost savings and cleaner energy that has not been available previously.

If the E-Cat is for real, and really is ready for commercialization, potential customers are going to be looking very carefully at whether they should adopt it, since the potential savings offer companies such a competitive advantage — and conversely, a competitive disadvantage if they don’t adopt it, and their competitors do.

LENR Needs Commercial Success

From various reports from around the world, such as the recent ICCF-21 conference in Colorado, we know that there is a dedicated group of researchers who are working hard in the LENR field, and are having some experimental success demonstrating that LENR is a valid field of scientific research. This has actually been the case for many years now, but it is still basically a neglected field, still struggling for respectability after the tarnishing that took place soon after 1989.

Based on publicly available information, I don’t see any prospects for LENR entering the commercial space in the near future beyond Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat. There may be some dark horses working behind the scenes, but one would expect that if Leonardo is really getting ready for a commercial launch, that anyone else ready to produce marketable products would be gearing up to fight for customers.

So my perception is that if Rossi comes through with a working commercial E-Cat within the next year or so, the field will get a real boost in new interest, and if he gets even some initial traction in terms of customers signing up for his “heat as a service” business plan, then one would expect that established players in the energy field will sit up and take notice, and start to try and figure out how Rossi is doing what he is doing.

Rossi has been very careful to provide as little help to potential competitors as possible in terms of providing information about how the E-Cat works, but he must realize that success for him could unleash a huge amount of R&D into the LENR field from new players who will surely think that if a lone inventor can pull off commercial LENR, then it is not beyond the reach of organizations with vastly more resources than Rossi has had. Thus, Rossi’s first-to-market advantage (assuming he makes it) may be challenged quite quickly.

However, if Rossi doesn’t come through, I don’t expect a great deal of change in the field in the near term. Simply stated, LENR needs to be commercialized for it to take off. Without commercial products, or at least strong experimental evidence of commercial-grade energy production, I would expect there will continue to be low levels of interest in LENR and we’ll continue on the present levels of activity.

Rossi: “Now Retrofitting” A Gas Turbine with the E-Cat SK

From comments on the Journal of Nuclear Physics, and in my recent interview with Andrea Rossi, it is clear that in recent weeks he has turned his attention from the E-Cat QX to the E-Cat SK.

Although he hasn’t gone into a great deal of detail, he has been talking about using the 100 kW E-Cat SK to drive what he is calling a “modified gas engine” which can generate electricity.

As you know, large electrical utility companies use gas turbines for their peak load time of the day or during extreme temperature weather. They use hydro, nuclear, or coal for their base load.

Once you have perfected the mating of your SK with a gas turbine, do you anticipate:
1- Retrofitting the SK to existing utility owned gas turbines?
2- Or must the turbines be custom built to accommodate the SK?

So as usual, Andrea Rossi is not content to rest on his earlier technological achievements. He says he has developed the QX to a point where he thinks it is ready for manufacturing, he has another avenue to pursue. In another question on the JONP, I asked him if he was satisfied with the control he has over the SK so far he answered, “yes: the next week we will make another crucial test.”

It will be interesting to find out more about that test and how it went.

Where the E-Cat ‘Heat as a Service’ Might Make Sense

In March, 2016 the local IEEE Section toured the central heating/cooling plant for the University of Wisconsin, Madison campus. It produces roughly 300 MW of steam and could also use steam-turbine driven chillers for chilled water. The site was recently converted from coal to natural gas and the boilers could also burn fuel oil. Because the natural gas supply was on an interruptible schedule, they stored about US$ 4 million worth of fuel oil. On one particularly cold January weekend, they used most of the fuel oil up when the extreme cold required the utility to cut off their gas supply to maintain . supplies for city residents. This newsletter (mid way down the page) has some information and pictures:

My point is, the “backup” heating supply is often required for commercial customers to get the best utility fuel rates. Rossi’s “must have their own backup” plan is not going to be that restrictive. If he provides the capital equipment, the commercial users will have only a small cost (facility mods and space for the equipment) and if is saves operating costs for fuel, it will be advantageous.

Supplying 300MW of heat, however with the current Rossi design might take a bit of work…

I will add a comment of my own here. I was talking recently with a former director of a paper mill who told me that during his working life there the company installed a natural gas Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system that provided all the heat and power to the mill, taking it off-grid. In addition to the natural gas source was, as Tom describes above, a fuel oil backup system stored in large tanks that could be used when there was an interruption in the gas supply.

Of course this made me wonder whether an E-Cat could be used instead of natural gas to provide the heat needed to run such a CHP system, keeping the natural gas and/or oil as a backup. I actually asked Andrea Rossi about this in my recent interview, and he said that Leonardo would be providing only heat, it would be up to the customer to decide what they wanted to do with that heat.

Assuming the E-Cat works well, if it’s simply a matter of replacing one heat source with another, without extensive engineering involved to do that, a company might be inclined to give the E-Cat a try, if the savings are attractive enough.

It sounds now like it will take place in early in 2019. It’s not clear yet whether it will be at a customer’s factory or in some other location. I think Rossi wants to make a big splash with this presentation, and I am sure that he will be making invitations to media representatives to help raise awareness about the product launch, so they may have priority. I hope that there will be enough places for plenty of people to attend. I hope to be there myself and it would be nice to meet up with other ECW readers there.

Aerospace Corporation’s Nickel-Hydrogen LENR Research Paper Published

One of the presentations at the recent ICCF-21 conference was by Edward J. Beiting of the Aerospace Corporation, a California nonprofit research and development center. The title of his presentation was “Investigation of the Nickel-Hydrogen Anomalous Heat Effect”

Here is an excerpt from the abstract of the presentation from the ICCF-21 summary posted here on the Cold Fusion Community website.

An apparatus was built that comprised identical test and a reference heated cells. These thermally isolated cells each contained two thermocouples and a 10 cm3 volume of ZrO2NiPd particles. Calibration functions to infer thermal power from temperature were created by electrically heating the filled cells with known powers when they were either evacuated or pressurized with 1 bar of N2. During the experimental trial, the test cell was pressurized with hydrogen and the control cell was pressurized with nitrogen. After conditioning the cells, both were heated to near 300°C for a period of 1000 hours (40 days). During this period, the test cell registered 7.5% more power (approximately 1 W) than the input power. The control cell measured approximately 0.05 W of excess power. The error in the excess power measurement was ±0.05 W.

Risks and Rewards For Businesses to Adopt The E-Cat

The most interesting piece of information, for me, to come out of my recent interview with Andrea Rossi was his answer to my question of how much money a customer will save by switching from their current energy source to the E-Cat. Rossi said the actual saving would depend on the specific situation, but said that the saving would be between 30 and 50 per cent.

That is the first time we have had even a ballpark number about how much the E-Cat would cost. It will be interesting to see how tempting that number will be to industrial customers. I would imagine that any industry, or any individual for that matter, would take notice if they were told that they could save up to half of their energy bill.

In many cases energy savings proposals come with an upfront cost, such as investing in a solar system, or a higher-efficiency furnace/AC unit. But Leonardo’s proposition apparently does not require any initial investment for equipment, since Leonardo will install the E-Cat hardware and will manage the E-Cats remotely at no charge.

There will be disruption required for the customer, which may come at some cost in time, space, and labor. They will have to find space for the E-Cat apparatus, and they will have to make modifications to their plants to incorporate an E-Cat heat source, and that might not be a trivial undertaking. They will also have to maintain a backup heat source and have it on continual standby in case the E-Cat goes offline — so that adds complexity.

Also, so far, Leonardo has no commercial track record. LENR is unknown to most people, and certainly not considered a real alternative energy source at this point. The customer cannot be sure how reliable the E-Cat will be. There is the risk that the E-Cat won’t work well for whatever reason, and the time and effort put into installation may not be worth it.

On the other hand, if the E-Cat system does work well, there are risks for customers not to give the E-Cat a chance. In industries where energy is significant cost of doing business, a savings of 30-50 percent could give a business an competitive advantage in terms of overall cost savings, allowing a business to provide products and/or services at lower costs to the end user.

There’s also the clean energy factor to consider. Again, if the E-Cat does work well, and it does not produce any pollution, it will be seen as an efficient way for a company to be environmentally responsible, which can count for a great deal in today’s economic and political environment.

It think it will be interesting to see whether the savings offered by Leonardo will be attractive enough for customers take them up on their E-Cat proposition.

Interview with Andrea Rossi on E-Cat Commercialization

A few of the main points covered:

The 100 kW E-Cat SK is still under development, and will undergo tests of months in length before they decide whether it is ready for commercialization.

The 1kW E-Cat QX is ‘almost’ ready. They will make a final decision by the end of June. Leonardo’s goal is to deliver E-Cats by the end of this year. Rossi stated that a public presentation may be delayed until early 2019 due to logistical difficulties of having a presentation in mid-winter during the holiday season when weather might be problematic.

Andrea Rossi stated that the first commercial efforts will be to provided heat for private industry. While technologically the E-Cat could be used to generate electricity in power stations, Rossi stated there are regulatory issues that make that a hard arena to break into.

The price that customers will pay for heat will depend on each specific situation, but Rossi states that it will be at between a 30 to 50 per cent discount on a customer’s current fuel costs.

Rossi has 22 people working with him as part of his team.

Alexander Parkhomov Reports on Just-completed 225 Day Test

On May 23, 2018, the nickel-hydrogen reactor developed by A.Parkhomov, launched on October 10, 2017, was switched off at the experimental design laboratory “KIT”. Hydrogen-saturated nickel weighing 1.2 g was used as fuel. The completion of the work is associated with a gradual reduction of excess heat release as a result of exhaustion of the energy resource of fuel. The reactor operated continuously for 225 days, generating 4200 MJ of thermal energy in excess of the consumed electricity (2.2 MeV per nickel atom). The maximum power of heat release is 1400 W at 380 W consumption (COP = 3,7), average 575 W at 355 W consumption (COP = 1,6).

Explaining Lugano (Bob Greener)

Bob Greenyer has published a new video titled “Explaining Lugano” in which he reviews the isotopic analyses that were found in the fuel/ash analysis of the 2014 Lugano test of the E-Cat. Bob reminds us that the main findings were that Al disappeared, all Ni isotopes migrated to 62 Ni, and the lithium ratios had inverted from natural ratios.

Photos of New LION Tubes in Preparation for Upcoming Experiment

A New Experimental block made for me by ALAN at LFH.

In 2 configurations -heater outside and heater inside.

The first photo is of an experiment soon to be run and consists of a LION CRYSTAL containing 7 Tubes. The central Tube is a LION 3 and is the source Driving the energy release. A LION STARLIGHT CORE consists of 7 such CRYSTALS.

These are water cooled and can be fitted with Thermocouples and control Tubes. In the larger STARLIGHT CORES the cooling pipes will run inside of the ceramic Tubes and will probably be swapped for Stainless steel.
Early days- working out experimental ideas, but with a very clear goal.

European Patent Office Grants Airbus LENR Patent

Thanks to a reader for letting me know about a patent that has been granted to Airbus Defence and Space GmbH for “Energy generating device and energy generating method and control arrangement and reactor vessel therefore”. The inventors listed are Bernhard Kotzias, Ralf Schliwa, and Toor Van Jan. The application was submitted in June 2016, and the patent grant date is March 7, 2018.

“In particular, the invention relates to a power generating apparatus having a reaction vessel or a cell for generating thermal energy by an exothermic reaction. As an exothermic reaction, a quantum condensate is carried out on a metal grid assisted electrodynamic process with hydrogen in particular. The participation of weak and strong interaction is not excluded. Preferably, a LENR is performed as an exothermic reaction, it stands for “low energy nuclear reaction”. This name has historical reasons, in the end, low-energy reaction products are produced by a fusion of nucleons.”

ICCF-21 Conference is Primary Venue for the Scientific Presentation and Discussion of Experimental and Theoretical Ideas and Experiments in the Field of LENR

FORT COLLINS, CO – MAY 31, 2018  – The 21st International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science (ICCF-21) will be held at the Lory Student Center on the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins, CO from June 3-8, 2018.  Roughly 150 scientists from over a dozen countries are expected to attend and present over 100 papers and posters on Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR).  Additionally, for the first time more than 25 graduate and undergraduate students and science teachers will attend the conference via a new scholarship program created to engage the next generation of capable scientists with fresh energy, ideas, and an interest in LENR.

LENR experiments over the past 30 years have shown that it is possible to release large amounts of nuclear energy using small chemical reactions.  The production of nuclear energy with LENR is groundbreaking because these reactions occur without dangerous radiation and do not produce radioactive waste.  While the empirical data for the occurrence and properties of LENR are well documented, the mechanisms that cause LENR are not yet understood.  This is a major scientific puzzle that the annual ICCF-21 conference hopes to address.

Over a dozen companies have been founded in several countries in the hopes of commercializing LENR as a new source of clean, practical energy. ICCF-21 gives these companies and scientists alike the opportunity to discuss LENR scientific research and advancements.
