In the game Ghost Recon: Wildlands a fictional narco state is depicted. The head of the cartel starts the game with an eerie speech … “I am not a liar. I have killed thousands. I have supplied more drug fiends than the top 3 pharmaceutical companies combined.“. The allusion to pharma is not an idle one. For a start they are another form of cartel. They deliberately keep people addicted to their drugs. But the comparison is likely to go beyond that. The chemists that work for pharma likely work off the books for drug cartels refining and streamlining drug production operations and experimenting with new drugs.

Of course the game is fiction. The United States build up off the coast of Venezuela is real.

This means that American special forces teams have likely been in Venezuela for months acquiring intel on drug cartel forces. Just as depicted in the video game.

Bringing in a comparison to a video game may seem trivial, even childish. However my observation with Wildlands is that it had some brilliant research behind it that highlighted the otherwise obscured issues behind drug cartels and pharma. The military missions in it as depicted in the game are likely mostly nonsense (after all we’re talking glorified Space Invaders here). But playing the game made me think about what has really been going on with narcotics in general, both street and pharma.

So will the real world events we are now seeing be known as The Pharma Wars ? While RFK changes things forever for pharma through MAHA, Trump is taking the street drug cartels to task. Are street drug cartels and pharma cartels so radically different ? Not really. Pharma drugs are metabolic modifiers and, especially psychiatric drugs, are very cocaine and heroine like. It’s prescription heroine basically.

I pray that there’s as little violence as possible but both cartels have been responsible for an enormous amount of death and destruction. It’s about time that those wars rumbling away in the background for decades be bought to and end and that we enter an era of peace. A’men to that.
