Introduction: The Decade-Old Audio Flaw in Company of Heroes 2

Ever since its release in 2013, Company of Heroes 2 has been celebrated for its gritty World War II atmosphere, tactile combat, and remarkably immersive squad audio. From panicked conscripts shouting under mortar fire to dry British sarcasm in the trenches, the squad soldier banter is among the best in real-time strategy history.

Yet, nearly every player has experienced the same maddening audio issue: the moment you turn up your volume or speech slider to actually hear what your infantry squads are saying, an HQ commander or announcer screams into your headset at deafening volume:

“BASE UNDER ATTACK!”
“OUR SECTOR HAS BEEN CUT OFF!”
“AN ENEMY FORCE IS CAPTURING OUR TERRITORY!”

Because the commander alerts are so overwhelmingly loud, players are routinely forced to dial back the game’s speech volume, sacrificing all the rich, tactical squad chatter and unit personality in order to protect their hearing during chaotic skirmishes.

The Root Cause: Flawed Audio Architecture

Why has this issue persisted without a simple slider fix in the game options? The core problem lies in how Relic Entertainment structured CoH2’s voice playback pipeline across two fundamentally different audio archetypes, all tied to a single in-game slider:

  • Single Shared Speech Volume Slider: In the game’s audio settings, there is only one master “Speech Volume” control. It governs both squad dialogue and tactical commander alerts simultaneously without independent gain controls.
  • 3D Positional Audio (Squad Dialogue): Voice lines spoken by infantry squads, weapon crews, and vehicle commanders are rendered in 3D spatial audio. They undergo aggressive distance attenuation (volume falloff) relative to the in-game camera position. Unless you zoom right down to unit level, their chatter is quiet and easily drowned out by nearby artillery, machine gun bursts, and engine roars.
  • 2D Non-Diegetic Audio (HQ Commander / Intel Alerts): Announcer notifications and base status alerts are triggered as 2D non-diegetic audio. They are pumped directly into the stereo/center mix at full reference volume (0 dB) with zero distance falloff, completely bypassing the 3D acoustic environment.

This creates an inescapable dilemma for players: lowering the master slider to tame the shrieking commander renders squad dialogue imperceptible, while raising it to hear soldier chatter results in acoustic punishment the second an alert fires.

How the Mod Solves the Issue: Targeted Miles Sound System Container Attenuation

Rather than attempting an impossible global mixer compromise, the Commander Voice Volume Balancer mod tackles the problem at the asset blueprint level within the game’s Miles Sound System architecture.

By extracting and editing the Blueprint Sound Containers (.bsc), the mod applies a surgical volume reduction directly to HQ announcer triggers while leaving the rest of the game’s audio untouched:

  • 70% Attenuation (-10.5 dB): 27 distinct commander and intelligence blueprint sound containers have been attenuated by exactly 70% (-10.5 dB). This brings tactical alerts down to a gentle, conversational radio level in the background.
  • Full Faction Coverage: The attenuation covers all 5 playable factions across the game:
    • Wehrmacht (Ostheer)
    • Soviet Army
    • US Forces (USF)
    • Oberkommando West (OKW)
    • British Forces (UKF)
  • Expansion Radio Layers & Squelch Undertones: The modifications also cover expansion radio layers (XP1 & XP2) and squelch noise undertones, eliminating harsh radio bursts.
  • 100% Unaltered Squad Dialogue: Every single squad banter file, ambient line, casualty shout, and weapon crew dialogue file remains at 100% reference volume.

With the mod installed, you can comfortably set your in-game Speech Volume slider high (70% to 80%). Squad chatter comes alive with crystal clarity, while HQ announcements remain subdued and unobtrusive in the background—exactly how real tactical military radio traffic sounds.

Technical Implementation: Navigating Relic’s RSA Signature Checks

Modding sound blueprints in Company of Heroes 2 presents a notorious technical hurdle: Relic’s archive verification system.

The game stores its core assets inside packed .sga archives. In official builds, these archives are protected by Relic’s proprietary RSA cryptographic signatures. If you attempt to unpack an .sga, modify the sound blueprint containers, and repack the archive, the game’s signature validation check fails on launch, abruptly crashing with an “Archive is corrupt!” error.

The solution leverages the Essence Engine’s loose file loading capability via the -dev launch option:

  • By placing the modified .bsc files into the loose directory tree under CoH2DataSoundBlueprintsContainers, the engine loads these files directly from the filesystem.
  • Adding -dev to the Steam launch options instructs the engine to prioritize local loose files over the packaged .sga archives, completely bypassing the cryptographic archive verification check cleanly and safely.

Installation Guide & Recommended Audio Settings

Installing the mod takes less than two minutes:

  1. Download & Extract: Download the mod package zip file and extract its contents.
  2. Install Files: Run install.bat from the extracted folder, or manually copy the CoH2Data folder into your root Company of Heroes 2 game directory (typically C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonCompany of Heroes 2).
  3. Add Steam Launch Option:
    • Open Steam and navigate to your Library.
    • Right-click Company of Heroes 2 and select Properties…
    • In the General tab, locate Launch Options at the bottom.
    • Add -dev to the input field.

Optimal Audio Configuration

For the best possible experience, configure your game audio settings as follows:

  • Speech Volume: Set to 70% – 80% (in DocumentsMy GamesCompany of Heroes 2configuration.lua, this corresponds to approximately speechvolume = 160).
  • Sound Voices: Set to 256 (High/Maximum). This ensures that complex firefights do not choke the audio engine or drop voice channels when multiple squads speak at once.
  • Master Volume: 100% (adjust your physical headphones/speakers to your preferred overall level).

Once set, you will enjoy the rich tactical atmosphere and soldier banter of Company of Heroes 2 as it was always meant to be heard—without fearing the next commander alert.
